Docklands faces overhaul as Gehl report urges major changes


International planning experts have called for a major overhaul of the development of Docklands with smaller intimate spaces and better connections to the seven kilometres of waterfront.

The report by the Danish Gehl Architects notes challenges including wind made worse by high-rise buildings, little shading on long walks and long building facades that alienate visitors.

The report also highlights the area's potential with its extensive water frontage, well-serviced tram route and many large undeveloped sites. The planning blueprint, commissioned by the state government developer and produced in 2010, was publicly released on Wednesday.
